StorTrail · in development

A clearer trail for data-bearing drives.

A desktop concept for recording each drive’s journey: removal, identification, secure storage, handover and confirmed destruction.

Product status

Prototype under test

StorTrail is not for sale or operational use yet. Naming, security, retention and legal claims will be checked before a public release.

The proposed workflow

From intake to final outcome.

Designed for teams that need an individual record for each data-bearing device, even when many drives share a ticket or storage bin.

01 / IntakeIdentify the drive

Scan or enter the tag, serial number, WWN, manufacturer and model.

02 / ProcessRecord the method

Capture media type, degaussing where relevant, operator and ticket.

03 / CustodyKnow where it is

Assign a secure bin or location and document handovers.

04 / OutcomeClose the trail

Record on-site destruction or transfer to a named provider with a documented receipt.

Why we are building it

Make the next question answerable.

When somebody asks where a drive went, the answer should not depend on a spreadsheet, a paper tag and someone’s memory lining up perfectly.

Design priorities

  • Fast repeated entry for large batches under one ticket
  • Role-based corrections with reasons, not silent overwrites
  • Exportable records and recoverable backups
  • Clear alerts if record integrity cannot be verified

We are testing the desktop prototype before deciding on release details. If your organisation has a drive-handling process worth understanding, KMB would welcome a conversation.
